Razer Megalodon 7.1 Review

The Razer Megalodon 7.1 Surround Sound gaming headset is likely known by quite a few online gamers.  It is a slick headset that really should appeal to the majority of computer gamers out there due to its low cost and high level of features.  It is not a perfect headset though, so read on and decide whether you want to add it to your online gaming arsenal.

When it comes to wireless headsets, audio interference can be an issue at times.  This is not an issue with the Megalodon simply because it is connected through a USB port, by way of a braided wire.  The braided wire has an added benefit in that it reduces the likelihood of tangles and snags, while simultaneously providing a fantastic voice and audio connection.

This reliability amply compliments the 7.1 channel surround sound that, according to Razer’s own website claims is developed by “the most advanced algorithms for gaming.”  Specifically, the audio is meant to feature variances in audio just as you would find it in real life.

Moving on to comfort and control, this is where things do get a little hairy for some players.  While many players who have given their reviews of this headset note that the controls and comfort are at least good, some will not care for the ear cups, or the remote control.

Looking at the ear cups for a moment, they are made from “plus velvet”, with the intention of isolating volume and creating a buffer between what you hear on the game, and the outside environment.  It sounds great, but they can get a little hot, and some may wish for a slightly larger ear cup.  It is fine for most, but some may take a slight issue here.

Coming back around to the remote control.  This is another one where people either seem to love the feature, or find it less than desired.  It is easy to use, and does not force you to pause your game or fool around with different drivers, but it is a little basic.  You get control over in line audio and bass, but that is about it.  You can focus on directional sound a bit, but this is by no means a deal maker or breaker for most.

To make this quick and easy this is probably one of the best headsets out there. The sound quality is the best I’ve ever had and the 7.1 just makes everything more enjoyable. The only problem with 7.1 is not many things support 7.1 at the moment…

A Quick Ear Force X31 Review

Turtle Beach is known for developing top of the line headsets that tend to appeal to the Xbox 360 gamer.  More specifically, the Ear Force X31 is a pretty slick headset that has a little something for everyone.  It’s not perfect though, so read on to find out more.  Those of you familiar with Turtle Beach and their Ear Force line of headsets, may recognize that this is similar to the X3 headset.  The X31 was designed purposely as an updated and improved version of the X3, which is no longer available.

Starting with the overall features , the X31 has digital RF wireless analog stereo inputs (USB powered) with an adjustable boom microphone, independent game volume and independent chat volume, a mutable microphone, oversized ear cups, chat boost, and auto shut off battery that extends battery life up to twenty hours.

Let’s take a quick look at the Good:

  • The aforementioned chat boosts gives a volume increase which coincides with game volume increases.  As the action gets louder, so does your voice
  • Battery power comes from two AAA batteries
  • The over sized ear cups fit around your ears, keeping pressure off and increasing overall comfort
  • Wireless
  • Stereo sound comes dangerously close to surround sound, enabling you to hear your enemies

There is always some bad, so let’s take a quick look:

  • The near $100 price tag is a bit steep for a video game headset
  • You don’t get any of your own voice feedback, meaning you will end up talking (yelling?) much louder than you thought
  • You tend to get a little feedback off of the chat signal.  This results in a mild “hiss” that seems odd given the overall quality of the set
  • That same AAA battery source can get expensive unless you buy rechargeable

Ear Force X41 Review

For anyone who takes their gaming and multimedia experience seriously, there is nothing better than a good, quality headset.  Whether you like to spend afternoons playing XBox or PS3, or recently got a new Blu Ray player, the experience is not complete until the audio experience has been addressed.  This is where the Ear Force X41 comes in.  Whereas many people will spend $1000 or more on a speaker system for their home, they may be less likely to spend 10% of that cost on a quality headset.  This is understandable in a way, but there are good reasons to go the headset route, especially for gamers

While some see the drawbacks of a headset being that it can only be used by one person at a time, others see it as a benefit.  For the times when background noise is too much, or those around you need their quiet, there is no need to sacrifice sound quality when an affordable and reliable headset fits the bill.  At $169, as of this writing, the X41 by Ear Force are a great choice for both gamers and those looking to heighten the overall multi media experience.

A look at some of the positive  features of the X41:

  • Voice Correction.  The headset receives feedback from the microphone as part of the overall sound signal.  The result is that you are aware if you are yelling compared to speaking into the microphone.

Are there any negatives?

  • These are not noise canceling.  The volume is well contained, reducing outside noise, as well as the noise through the headset, but it is still something that can be heard at high volumes

The first issue that an audiophile looks for when purchasing a headset is sound quality.  This headset has sound quality nearly perfected, as well as numerous features providing ease of use.  As well, the headset has all the bells and whistles that take the overall product over the top.

logitech g35The Logitech G35 is a solid and affordable option for the recreational gamer, or even the hardcore gamer who wants a similar headset to the Logitech G930, but is wlling to sacrifice the wireless capability in favor of a reduced price.  Between surround sound capbilities, a noise canceling microphone and several options to increase the comfort of the headset, the G35 Headset is a solid option for anyone playing computer games who wants to improve the overall quality of their playing experience.

Much can be made regarding headset capabilities and whether certain options are overkill, while other features and capabilities may under deliver.  This is not usually the case when it comes to Logitech headsets.  Logitech consistently produces high quality, and affordable headsets that can dramatically improve the experience of the customer.

The primary features of the Logitech G35 are nearly identical to the G930:

Customizable G-Keys giving you control over voice, music and other sound qualities and features
Adjustable headband pads providing lasting comfort
Noise Canceling Microphone

The Drawbacks are few, but important to know before you buy:

The Tritton Ax Pro Dolby Digital Precision Gaming Headset is one of the highest quality headsets in this price range- $162.86 on Amazon as of this writing- updated on 4/16).  As one reviewer has noted,  most other headsets with comparable quality and features would retail well over $200.  With that said though, any good customer would want to do his or her research to make a decision whether this is the headset for them.  Without further ado, let’s get into the pros and cons of the headset, so you can do less research and more gaming.

The Pros of the Tritton Ax Pro:

  • Compatible with DVD, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Mac, or any other platform with a digital audio output
  • 5.1 Digital Audio
  • 8 Precision speakers total, providing top of the line surround sound experience and sound precision
  • 3D audio experience provided by the speaker set up and 5.1 digital surround sound
  • Inline audio controller allowing optimal control over all sound aspects, including chat
  • Soft velvet and faux leather pads for comfortable wear during those marathon sessions
